Winter Weekend Getaway in Door County

Are you debating whether or not to plan a quick getaway up in Door County during the cold winter months? Do it! You will love how quiet it is, less hectic, and still insanely beautiful, with many of the popular businesses remaining open during the off-season. These are only a few reasons winter is my favorite time to schedule a few weekend trips to my happy place.

Day 1:

  1. Breakfast at Al Johnson’s - Start your morning with a delicious breakfast at Al Johnsons in Sister Bay. Al Johnsons is known for the goats grazing on their roof. Unfortunately, they will not be out during the cold winter months. Instead, guests enjoy shorter wait times, all while enjoying the same delicious Swedish-style food. Their Swedish pancakes, topped with lingonberries are always my go-to. They also have a large specialty gift shop connected to the restaurant.

  2. Skip Stone Coffee Roasters -  If you are ready for a mid-morning pick-me-up, walk over to Skip Stone Coffee Roasters. The upstairs is my absolute favorite spot to enjoy a caffeinated beverage and enjoy the views.

  3. Winter Hike at Newport State Park - Don’t forget to pack your boots (or snowshoes) and winter gear. Newport State Park in Ellison Bay offers great winter trails with amazing shoreline views. Click here for a winter trail map.

  4. Peach Barn Brewery - (open at 11 on the weekends) Grab a flight of locally crafted brews at The Peach Barn Farmhouse Brewery (their Peach Sour is my favorite). They have a large heated indoor tasting room with ample seating, an assortment of board games, and the perfect afternoon winter stop.

  5. Thyme Restaurant - Thyme has become one of our favorite go-to dinner spots in Door County. They have a unique menu, and the atmosphere cannot be beaten.

  6. Twelve Eleven Wine Bar - End your day with a glass (or two) of wine at Twelve Eleven Wine Bar (conveniently located next to Thyme). They also have an assortment of local beers, cheeses, and crackers.

  1. Blue Horse Cafe - I always make time for a visit to the Blue Horse Cafe whenever visiting Door County. This cafe is located across from the public beach in Fish Creek. They have great breakfast sandwiches and pastries. If you are an iced coffee fan, I suggest you try their Salty Dog! If you are in a hurry, you can order ahead online here

  2. Shop in Fish Creek - Fish Creek is known for their cute and unique shops. After grabbing a drink at the Blue Horse, start your stroll down Fish Creeks Main Street. There are many great souvenir shops and local artesian shops.

  3. Grab Lunch at Hill Street. They have one of the most unique menus and every single item on it is delicious.

  4. Horse Carriage ride at Lautenbach’s - Lautenbachs Winery offers a unique horse carriage ride experience during the winter. You can reserve a horse-drawn sleigh with John by calling 920-421-1152. After your ride, stop back inside for a wine tasting and to shop for local goods.

  5. Harbor Ridge Winery Igloos - Can you think of a better way to enjoy a glass of wine in the winter than in a heated outdoor igloo? They also offer brunch in the igloos on Sundays.

  6. Husby’s - End your day with a casual dinner at Husby’s Food & Spirits in Sister Bay.

So, if you are looking for a winter getaway option in Wisconsin, Door County has a lot to offer. We hope these suggestions help you when planning your next winter getaway.

Cheers!
